Someone’s not happy about a fair and honest Supreme Court.
In a recent statement, Representative Jamie Raskin, representing Maryland’s 8th congressional district, expressed his dismay at the apparent partisan leanings of certain justices within the U.S. Supreme Court. During an interview on MSNBC’s “The ReidOut,” Raskin suggested a drastic move: relocating the Supreme Court to the headquarters of the Republican National Committee (RNC). This proposal stemmed from his belief that some justices were behaving more like political operatives than impartial arbiters of the law.
Raskin’s concern was triggered by statements made during arguments regarding presidential immunity, particularly in the context of former President Trump. One of Trump’s attorneys, D. John Sauer, raised eyebrows by suggesting that even extreme actions, such as ordering the military to eliminate a political rival, could potentially be shielded by presidential immunity. Justice Sonia Sotomayor challenged this assertion, questioning whether such fundamentally evil actions should be protected from prosecution. However, Sauer’s response implied that many scenarios, no matter how egregious, might fall under the umbrella of official presidential acts.
Raskin took particular issue with Justice Samuel Alito’s suggestion that prosecuting Trump could incite further violence. He criticized Alito’s reasoning as pandering to Trump’s “narcissistic criminal worldview,” accusing him of undermining the fundamental principle that no one, not even the president, is above the law. Raskin vehemently rejected the idea that holding Trump accountable for his actions would somehow encourage him or his supporters to resort to violent coups to maintain power.
In Raskin’s view, such a line of thinking represented a dangerous capitulation to authoritarianism. He emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law and holding all individuals accountable for their actions, regardless of their position of power. Raskin lamented the apparent erosion of judicial impartiality, comparing certain justices’ behavior to the political partisanship often seen in Congress.
