This is going to cause some backlash.
Lara Trump recently took a strong stance against Vice President Kamala Harris, likening her to an overpriced designer handbag that she derisively called a “trash bag.” During a July 29 interview with Sean Hannity on FOX News, the RNC co-chair shared her frustrations with how Harris has been presented by the media.
Hannity kicked off the conversation by pointing to a New York Magazine cover featuring Harris with the title “Welcome to Kamalot,” suggesting that the media is overly promoting her image. He argued that Harris has one of the most radical records of any major political figure and stressed the need for Republicans to vigorously expose her record to voters.
Lara Trump agreed with Hannity, noting, “You’re absolutely right, Sean. It’s clear that mainstream media isn’t going to do the job of exposing her record. In fact, they seem determined to rewrite history.” She criticized the way Harris has been lauded, comparing it to a high-priced designer bag that was essentially a trash bag. Trump elaborated, “It’s akin to a situation where a designer released a bag that looked like a trash bag but sold it for an exorbitant amount, thinking people would buy into the hype. That’s exactly what they’re trying to do with Kamala Harris.”
In 2022, Balenciaga had famously introduced a handbag inspired by a garbage bag, priced at $1,790.
Lara Trump, who is married to Eric Trump, has been vocal in her criticism of Harris, reflecting broader Republican sentiments. Since President Biden’s endorsement of Harris, Republicans have intensified their critiques. Former President Donald Trump has called Harris Biden’s “Cackling Copilot” and criticized her laughter and demeanor in various speeches. Trump also labeled Harris as a “radical left lunatic” and accused her of being “evil” and “unhinged” during a speech in St. Cloud.
Comedian Stephanie Jones, who calls herself “the Konservative Kamala,” also joined the fray by posting a viral video impersonating Harris’s laugh, which garnered over 2.6 million views on TikTok.
Harris defended her laugh in an April interview with Drew Barrymore, attributing it to her upbringing and family tradition of hearty laughter. That interview clip, shared on X, has received more than 6.2 million views.
The Kamala Harris campaign has responded to the criticism by labeling Trump and his vice-presidential pick JD Vance as “weird,” prompting further backlash from Republicans. Steven Cheung, Trump’s communications director, defended the criticism, stating, “President Trump is committed to telling the truth about Kamala Harris’s weak, failed, and dangerously liberal policies.”
