This would be the highest form of treason in the eyes of the GOP.
On Sunday, Olivia Troye, a former national security adviser to ex-Vice President Mike Pence, urged him to back Vice President Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign, describing it as the “right thing” to do. Troye, who has become a vocal critic of the Trump administration since her departure from the White House in 2020, expressed her views during an interview with MSNBC’s Alex Witt. She called on Pence to lend his support to Harris, who has recently been confirmed as the presumptive Democratic nominee for President.
Troye appealed directly to Pence, saying, “If you’re listening, I urge you to consider endorsing Harris.” She added, “You’ve shown remarkable bravery in the past and are acutely aware of what’s at stake. Your endorsement could have a significant impact on conservatives across the nation.”
Troye is now affiliated with the newly established “Republicans for Harris” group, which includes over 25 Republicans. She emphasized the gravity of the current election, stating that it’s crucial not to let partisan divisions endanger the nation’s freedoms and constitutional principles.
Troye argued that this election transcends party lines, highlighting the importance of preserving democratic values and individual liberties traditionally championed by the Republican Party. She believes Harris is working to build a coalition to safeguard these rights. The “Republicans for Harris” initiative aims to activate Republican supporters to advocate for Harris within their networks, referring to this as a “campaign within a campaign.”
The group is set to hold events in key battleground states such as Arizona, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania starting Monday. Pence, who suspended his own presidential bid last year, has previously stated he would not endorse former President Trump’s reelection effort due to their strained relationship after the 2020 election.
For the past two years, Pence has maintained that he did not have the authority to reject the 2020 election results, despite pressure from Trump. His criticism of Trump’s actions on January 6, 2021, has increasingly set him apart from the GOP base.
President Biden endorsed Harris, who has since gained strong backing from the Democratic Party and major donors. Although Pence has acknowledged that Biden made a sound choice in selecting Harris, he has not provided further details on his stance regarding her candidacy.
