Democrats Now Pushing Patriotism
This week, Democrats have sought to redefine the narrative that patriotism is solely the domain of Republicans or MAGA supporters. At their recent convention in Chicago, the scene was unmistakably patriotic—enthusiastic chants of “USA, USA, USA!” resonated through the venue, and attendees sported camo gear and American flag hats. Vice President Kamala Harris capped off her speech with a dramatic red, white, and blue balloon drop, surrounded by a sea of large American flags.
Patriotic symbols are a staple of former President Donald Trump’s rallies, and Democrats are now making a concerted effort to demonstrate that their commitment to American values is just as strong. Vice President Harris emphasized this during her speech, asserting that it is their duty to champion the country’s core principles with optimism and resolve. “It is our time to do what past generations have done—guided by hope and belief, to fight for the nation we cherish and uphold the immense privilege of being American,” Harris stated.
The convention featured delegates in “Harris-Walz” camo hats and sparkly American flag cowboy hats, with The Chicks performing the national anthem before a backdrop of Stars and Stripes. A DJ played classic patriotic songs, and the crowd responded with cheers when asked if they were proud to be American.
Harris’s focus on patriotism echoed President Biden’s themes of “possibilities” and overcoming limits, but with her unique perspective as a younger Democratic leader and daughter of immigrants. Jamal Simmons, a former communications director for Harris, highlighted that Democrats believe in inclusivity and the strength of a diverse America, contrasting with the perception that Republicans may restrict access based on race, gender, or immigration status.
Former Rep. Carlos Curbelo (R-Fla.) acknowledged the Democrats’ effort to reclaim a patriotic narrative. He noted that the party’s previous focus on America’s flaws had alienated some voters, particularly within Hispanic and African American communities. Curbelo praised the Democrats’ shift toward celebrating national pride as a strategic move likely to resonate with many Americans, especially immigrant families who value their place in the country.
Veterans took the stage before Harris’s speech, with Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.) and other veterans voicing support for Harris, eliciting chants of “USA” from the crowd. Former GOP Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) also endorsed Harris, reinforcing that Democrats share a deep love for the country.
Harris’s campaign message of “freedom” is central to their patriotic appeal. Simmons pointed out that terms like freedom and justice are now integral to the Democratic platform, mirroring the way former President Barack Obama’s message of “hope” resonated during his 2008 campaign.
In his keynote address, Governor Tim Walz (D-Minn.) underscored a shared love for America, stating, “We’re all here tonight for one beautiful, simple reason: We love this country.” Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, a veteran himself, responded forcefully to criticisms from Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio) about childless Americans, emphasizing that military service reflects a strong commitment to the nation’s future.
While Harris did address the dangers of a potential Trump administration and criticized his role in the January 6 riots, her focus remained on presenting patriotism as a core Democratic value, distinct from her political adversaries. She urged voters to “write the next great chapter” in American history, appealing to a sense of shared responsibility and pride in the nation’s legacy.
