Released by HBO through Pelosi’s daughter, a documentary filmmaker, and later acquired by CNN, the footage showcases Pelosi’s focus on former President Donald Trump and her handling of the situation.
One of the most striking moments in the footage is Pelosi’s insistence that Trump “has gotta pay a price” for his role in the riot. At around 3:30 a.m. on January 7, Pelosi expresses her intense frustration, stating, “I just feel sick what he did to the Capitol and to the country today. He’s gotta pay a price for that.” This remark underscores her determination to hold Trump accountable, reflecting her belief that his actions were a significant breach of duty.
The footage, which captures Pelosi’s actions and reactions over January 5, 6, and 7, also reveals her resistance to addressing concerns about Capitol security. Pelosi dismisses her communications director’s suggestions to focus on the calls for the firing of U.S. Capitol Police (USCP) Chief Steven Sund. Instead, she insists that the narrative should remain centered on Trump, saying, “I think our focus has to be on the president. Let’s not divert ourselves.”
Pelosi’s comments about the National Guard’s delayed response also come into focus. She questions why the National Guard was not deployed sooner, noting, “How many times did the members ask, ‘Are we prepared? Are we prepared?’ We’re not prepared for the worst.” Her frustration with the security response highlights her broader concerns about preparedness and responsibility.
Republicans have criticized Pelosi for shifting the blame to Trump rather than addressing her own role in the Capitol’s security issues. Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-Ga.), who is reviewing the January 6 events, has pointed out that Pelosi’s comments in the footage reveal her control over House operations and security. “Nancy Pelosi has avoided taking responsibility for the security failures of January 6,” Loudermilk said. “This footage confirms her focus on Trump while acknowledging her own role in managing security.”
