Kamala should apoligize!
The National Association of Police Organizations has called out Vice President Kamala Harris for her controversial statements made in 2020, which linked modern policing to the historical injustices of slavery and Jim Crow laws. Michael McHale, the president of the organization, criticized Harris for her apparent lack of understanding and disregard for the challenges faced by contemporary law enforcement officers.
In a recent statement, McHale asserted, “Kamala Harris has once again demonstrated a troubling ignorance of the realities faced by today’s police officers and a disturbing indifference to the brave men and women who risk their lives daily to safeguard our communities.” He went on to demand that Harris retract and apologize for her remarks, which he believes unfairly equated policing with historical injustices such as lynching and slavery.
The call for an apology also highlights Harris’s controversial positions on police funding. McHale pointed out her previous support for the movement to defund the police and criticized her backing of the ‘Minnesota Freedom Fund,’ which, he argues, contributed to the release of individuals arrested for violent crimes during the unrest following George Floyd’s death in Minneapolis.
During a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, Harris made a sweeping statement connecting America’s history of systemic racism to various institutions, including policing. She said, “When we claim that the nation has a long history of discrimination and racism, we mean that everything from slavery, Jim Crow laws, killing and policing, our institutions have done crime to Black Americans.” Although she later revised her statement online to replace “policing” with “the criminal justice system,” McHale and others argue that her initial comments reflect a harmful and inaccurate portrayal of law enforcement.
The National Association of Police Organizations is calling for a clear retraction and apology from Harris, urging her to acknowledge the significant contributions and sacrifices of police officers who work tirelessly to ensure public safety and uphold justice.
