Trump’s Plan To Slash Regulations
Former President Donald Trump has dramatically escalated his commitment to regulatory reform, underscoring how dismantling the expansive regulations of the Biden administration has become a pivotal objective for Republicans.
During his initial term, Trump championed a policy where, for every new regulation introduced, two existing regulations had to be removed. Recently, Trump has taken this commitment to a new level, proposing a ratio of 10 eliminated regulations for every new one added.
“I am proud to be the only president in recent history to achieve a net reduction in regulations, and it was a significant reduction,” Trump stated in his address at the Economic Club of New York. “In my second term, I pledge to eliminate at least 10 old regulations for every new one we introduce. We will manage this with ease.”
Trump criticized the regulatory expansion under President Joe Biden, linking it to Vice President Kamala Harris, who is now running against him in the upcoming presidential election after Biden’s decision to withdraw due to low approval ratings and concerns about his age.
Republicans are committed to reducing the size and influence of the administrative state—executive branch agencies that create and enforce regulations with minimal Congressional oversight.
The Biden administration’s increased regulation of emerging sectors, such as cryptocurrency, contrasts with Trump’s vision of America leading in technological innovation. “Rather than stifling future industries, we will support them and make America the global hub for cryptocurrency and bitcoin,” Trump asserted.
Republicans have criticized the current administration for using the rulemaking process to bypass Congressional authority, pushing liberal policies that wouldn’t clear the legislative hurdles.
Trump’s strategy for rolling back Biden-era regulations would involve several approaches. He plans to use executive orders to revise or eliminate recent rules, while Congress and the President would use the Congressional Review Act to swiftly overturn regulations from Biden’s final year in office. Additionally, legislative reforms like the REINS Act, which would require Congressional approval for major new rules, are also on the table.
Trump also proposed establishing a government efficiency commission, inspired by suggestions from Tesla founder Elon Musk. This commission would conduct a comprehensive audit of federal agencies, aiming to recommend significant reforms to streamline government operations and improve performance.
