GOP Subpoenas Biden’s Border Chief

The House Oversight Committee has taken significant steps by subpoenaing Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, seeking intelligence reports and communications related to Minnesota Governor Tim Walz’s connections with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). This move is part of a broader Republican effort to investigate potential foreign influence ahead of the 2024 election.

Chairman James Comer (R-KY) noted that a whistleblower brought attention to a group chat among Department of Homeland Security employees, intriguingly titled “NST NFT Bi-Weekly Sync.” This chat reportedly contains crucial information about Governor Walz that could shed light on the committee’s inquiry. Comer has firmly rejected any notion that this investigation is driven by political motivations, emphasizing that the committee’s focus on the CCP started well before Walz emerged as a vice presidential candidate for the Democratic Party.

Comer highlighted the potential national security implications of Walz’s alleged involvement with the CCP. In a letter obtained by the Washington Examiner, he expressed concern that if a sitting governor and a major party’s nominee for vice president has engaged—knowingly or unknowingly—with the CCP, it raises serious questions about the federal government’s capacity to protect the nation from foreign influence.

Recent reports indicate that Governor Walz has visited China approximately 30 times, including trips during his honeymoon. Furthermore, he organized a trip to China for his high school students, which was partially sponsored by the CCP. This history has prompted GOP lawmakers to scrutinize whether Walz’s extensive ties to China could affect his foreign policy positions and his willingness to confront Chinese aggression if he were to be elected vice president.

Comer is demanding that DHS produce unredacted materials related to the group chat and provide intelligence reports and notes from November 2023 onward concerning Walz and his team. The committee has scheduled Mayorkas to appear before them on October 7 at 10 a.m. This investigation underscores the Republicans’ commitment to ensuring accountability and transparency regarding potential threats to U.S. sovereignty.
