In a joint statement, Georgia Democratic Party Chair Rep. Nikema Williams, along with other prominent Democrats, celebrated the ruling as a triumph for democracy. They argued that the initial intent behind the rule was to create confusion and doubt regarding election outcomes, particularly in light of the razor-thin margin that decided the state in the 2020 presidential election.
Set to take effect on October 22, this rule would have required three county election officials at each polling station to manually verify the machine-counted ballots—a process they would not have conducted in real-time. This significant change, passed by a narrow 3-2 vote by the State Elections Board, is now the subject of multiple legal challenges.
Democrats claim the rule was designed to foster division and uncertainty among voters. In a ruling by Fulton County Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney, the judge acknowledged the potential benefits of the rule on paper. However, he raised alarms over the timing and lack of preparation for its implementation, emphasizing the absence of necessary training and funding for election workers.
