Since taking office, New York Governor Kathy Hochul has come under fire for her use of private jet travel at taxpayer expense. These flights have raised questions about the governor’s priorities, especially given New York’s extensive network of commercial airports that could easily accommodate her travel needs. There is no shortage of airports in New York state, and most major locations are well-connected to cities across the country, making it hard to justify the extravagant spending on private jets.

A large portion of these flights took place during the 2022 election campaign when Hochul was facing off against her Republican opponent, Lee Zeldin. The cost of each private flight ranged from $5,000 to over $38,000, raising concerns about the appropriateness of such lavish spending during a time when New Yorkers are struggling with high taxes and economic challenges. Many believe there is no reason for any elected official in New York to rely on private jets when commercial travel options are readily available.

Critics have also pointed out the hypocrisy in Hochul’s climate change stance. As a leading advocate for climate legislation, Hochul has publicly championed efforts to reduce carbon emissions and tackle pollution. However, her frequent use of private jets, which contribute heavily to carbon emissions, paints a stark contrast to her public stance. While Hochul’s office has defended the flights, claiming they were essential for campaign purposes, many are questioning whether her actions align with her environmental rhetoric.
