Biden is staying far away from his son’s legal problems and now people are asking questions.
First Lady Jill Biden spent her birthday on Monday attending the gun trial of her son, Hunter Biden, marking a historic occasion as a sitting president’s child faces criminal charges.
This trial centers on a firearm purchase made by Hunter Biden in 2018, one of two significant trials he is facing as the 2024 general election approaches. The other trial, concerning federal tax charges, has been postponed until September.
President Joe Biden has very strangely maintained a distance from his son’s legal issues, and he does not plan to attend either of Hunter’s trials. On Tuesday, he is scheduled to travel to France for the 80th anniversary of D-Day.
“As president, I refrain from commenting on ongoing federal cases. However, as a father, my love for Hunter is unconditional, and I am incredibly proud of his resilience and recovery,” Joe Biden said in a statement. “Our family has faced many challenges together, and Jill and I will always support Hunter with our love and encouragement.”
Jill Biden, along with Hunter’s sister Ashley Biden and his wife Melissa Cohen Biden, attended the trial on Monday. The First Lady arrived at the courthouse shortly before 9 a.m., wearing a purple suit. “Happy birthday,” Hunter reportedly told his mother, acknowledging her 73rd birthday. “I got you a special event.”
David Weiss, the special counsel leading the prosecution, accuses Hunter Biden of falsely claiming on a federal form that he was not using drugs at the time of purchasing the gun. Hunter Biden has pleaded not guilty to the three charges, which carry a potential sentence of up to 25 years in prison if he is convicted.
As the First Lady increases her visibility on the campaign trail, her presence is seen as crucial in personalizing President Biden’s image and connecting with a broader audience. Democratic strategists have emphasized the importance of her role in helping the campaign resonate with voters who are less politically engaged.
