Things are getting ugly between Biden and Pelosi.
Anita Dunn, a former senior advisor to President Biden, took a veiled shot at Nancy Pelosi and recently leveled criticism at “certain leaders” within the Democratic Party regarding their failure to retain control of the House of Representatives in 2022. Her remarks come in the wake of former Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-Calif.) assertion that she was “never that impressed” with Biden’s political strategy.
In a discussion on Politico’s “Playbook Deep Dive” podcast, Dunn, who has shifted her focus to working with the Democratic super PAC Future Forward and supporting Vice President Kamala Harris, highlighted the importance of Democratic success not just in the presidential election but also in House and Senate races. Dunn expressed that her transition of support from Biden to Harris was “not as difficult as you would think,” underscoring her commitment to the party’s broader goals.
Dunn addressed speculation about internal party tensions, noting that there has been significant friction involving top Democrats like Pelosi, former President Obama, and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. Politico’s Ryan Lizza pointed out that there were rumors of these figures exerting pressure on Biden to withdraw from the 2024 race, a move Biden eventually made. Dunn firmly asserted that Biden is “1,000 percent” committed to supporting Harris.
Dunn emphasized the critical nature of the upcoming election, stating, “The task in front of us is to win this election and to prevent Donald Trump from returning to the presidency. We must also win back the House of Representatives, which, if certain leaders had done a better job in 2022, we might have already achieved.” She stressed the urgency of this mission, reflecting Biden’s sentiment that the country is at a pivotal crossroads.
Pelosi, who has reportedly played a behind-the-scenes role in urging Biden to step aside, has not communicated with the President since his announcement. In a recent interview, Pelosi expressed dissatisfaction with Biden’s political operations, despite acknowledging the achievement of winning the White House. She highlighted her concerns about the efficacy of Biden’s strategy and the necessity for decisive action moving forward.
Dunn’s remarks highlights the ongoing internal divisions within the Democratic Party and the challenges they face as they prepare for the next election cycle, all while emphasizing the need to prevent a return of Trump to the White House.
