Kamala Picks Up Major Endorsement

The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), the nation’s oldest and largest Latino civil rights organization, is set to make a historic endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris for the upcoming presidential election. This marks a significant departure from LULAC’s long-standing policy of remaining neutral in political contests, as reported by NBC News.

The decision to back Harris comes with LULAC’s PAC, LULAC Adelante, taking a prominent role in the endorsement. This shift is seen as a strategic move to influence the direction of the upcoming election, especially in the wake of growing concerns about a potential return of Donald Trump to the presidency.

Domingo Garcia, chair of LULAC Adelante PAC and a former LULAC president, articulated the group’s stance by stating, “We are endorsing Kamala Harris and Tim Walz because of their commitment to addressing the real challenges facing Latino communities and all Americans. We believe they will act in the best interests of our nation and our community.”

LULAC has been working on developing its PAC for some time, with the urgency to act intensifying due to fears over a possible Trump presidency. LULAC CEO Juan Proaño emphasized the necessity of countering what he describes as “politics of hate-mongering and scapegoating” targeting Latinos and immigrants. He stressed that this election is crucial not only for the Latino community but for the integrity of American democracy.

In light of this endorsement, LULAC’s local chapters are expected to ramp up their support for the Democratic ticket in crucial swing states. According to Pew Research, this election cycle sees over 36.2 million Latinos eligible to vote, the highest number in history, making their support particularly significant.

The Harris-Walz campaign has already launched its first ad aimed at Latino voters, which will be broadcasted across battleground states. Kevin Munoz, a spokesperson for the campaign, highlighted Harris’s personal connection to the Latino community, noting her immigrant mother and her record of taking on significant challenges. He framed Harris as a candidate who will use her determination to confront Donald Trump, who is criticized for his anti-Latino rhetoric and policies.

Founded in 1929, LULAC has historically championed the rights of Americans of Mexican descent and continues to play a vital role in shaping political discourse and electoral outcomes.
