Speaker Johnson Doubles Down On Gaetz
Rep. Mike Johnson (R-La.) offered a strong defense of President-elect Donald Trump’s nomination of former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) as attorney general, calling him “one of the brightest minds in Washington.” Speaking on “Fox News Sunday,” Johnson dismissed concerns over Gaetz’s past controversies and emphasized that Gaetz would be a major force for reform within the Department of Justice (DOJ).
“Matt Gaetz has been my colleague for over eight years, and I can tell you firsthand, he is incredibly intelligent and a fierce advocate for justice,” Johnson stated. He went on to explain that Gaetz understands the deep issues within the DOJ, particularly its weaponization against political opponents. “He has been a strong voice in holding government institutions accountable, and that’s why the establishment in Washington is so rattled by his nomination,” Johnson added.
While Gaetz’s nomination has raised some eyebrows, even within the GOP, due to ongoing investigations into his conduct, Johnson was quick to defend him. The former congressman has faced allegations of sexual misconduct and drug use, but has strongly denied any wrongdoing. Additionally, the DOJ previously investigated claims that Gaetz was involved in a relationship with a minor, but declined to bring charges. Despite these controversies, Johnson believes Gaetz is exactly the type of reformer the DOJ needs.
“The department has been misused for political purposes, and Matt Gaetz will work to restore its integrity,” Johnson remarked. He also addressed concerns raised by some Republican senators about the Ethics Committee’s investigation into Gaetz, which ended abruptly when Gaetz resigned from the House following his nomination. Johnson argued that the Ethics Committee has no jurisdiction over former members of Congress, and releasing the report would set a dangerous precedent.
As Gaetz moves through the confirmation process, Johnson remains confident that he is the right man to lead the DOJ and bring about much-needed reforms. “This is a critical moment, and we need someone with the courage to tackle the corruption in Washington. Matt Gaetz is that person,” Johnson concluded.
