Republicans Call Out Liz Cheney

On Sunday, Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders took a firm stance against former Representative Liz Cheney’s recent political endorsements, asserting that Cheney can no longer claim to be a true conservative or Republican. Cheney’s decision to back Democrat Kamala Harris over former President Donald Trump has sparked controversy, with Sanders sharply criticizing her.

Speaking on ABC’s “This Week,” Sanders expressed that Cheney’s support for Harris, who is considered one of the most progressive candidates the Democrats have ever nominated, disqualifies her from being labeled a conservative. “When you endorse the most radical nominee from the Democratic Party, it undermines your claim to conservatism,” Sanders remarked. “It doesn’t align with Republican values and certainly doesn’t align with being a Republican. It appears she’s more interested in maintaining the establishment’s status quo.”

Cheney, who also appeared on the program, maintains that she is still a conservative and a Republican, but emphasized her divergence from Trump, claiming she’s not a “Trump Republican.” She suggested that other Republicans and independents might also choose not to vote for Trump in the upcoming election. Cheney’s father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, has also backed Harris.

However, Sanders, a former White House press secretary under Trump, believes Cheney represents a small faction within the Republican Party. “Prominent Republicans continue to support President Trump,” Sanders noted, dismissing Cheney’s influence as minimal. “It’s no surprise she isn’t backing Trump, but it’s shocking she still calls herself a conservative while endorsing someone who fundamentally opposes conservative principles.”

Looking ahead to Tuesday’s presidential debate, Sanders believes it’s a crucial opportunity for Harris, who has been notably reticent with the media. “It’s absurd that Harris avoids the press and doesn’t answer questions from the American people,” Sanders said. In contrast, she highlighted Trump’s preparedness for debates, noting that his routine of addressing the press and holding rallies keeps him sharp.

Sanders criticized Harris’s record, stating that she faces the debate from a “position of weakness,” citing high inflation, economic struggles, and border policy failures under the current administration. “The economic and security issues under Biden have been disastrous,” Sanders said. “Harris can’t escape responsibility for these failures.”

Additionally, Sanders defended Trump’s stance on China, stating that his calls for sanctions are a means of holding foreign entities accountable and encouraging domestic production. “Trump’s focus on American manufacturing and holding other nations accountable is a core conservative value,” Sanders concluded. “Empowering American businesses over foreign production aligns with conservative principles.”
