Civil Rights Group Endorses Kamala?
The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), the nation’s oldest and largest Latino civil rights organization, has made a groundbreaking move by endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris for president. This historic decision represents LULAC’s first-ever endorsement of a presidential candidate since its inception in 1929.
On Friday, the political action committee of LULAC’s executive board voted unanimously to support Kamala Harris and her running mate, Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota. The endorsement is a significant moment for LULAC, reflecting their belief in the candidates’ ability to address critical issues affecting Latino communities and the broader American public.
Domingo Garcia, the chairman of LULAC’s Adelante PAC and a former national president of the organization, emphasized the importance of this endorsement. “We are honored to support Kamala Harris and Tim Walz because they are committed to tackling the real challenges faced by Latino communities and all Americans. They have demonstrated a genuine dedication to our interests and to the country’s well-being,” Garcia stated.
Garcia further criticized former President Donald Trump and his proposed Project 2025, asserting that Trump’s vision would lead to continued division and hostility towards Latino communities. In contrast, he praised Harris for her track record as a steadfast ally to Latinos. “Vice President Harris has consistently supported the Latino community throughout her career,” Garcia noted. “She is the candidate who will ensure our continued prosperity and safeguard the future of our nation.”
The endorsement comes at a pivotal time as Harris seeks to regain Latino support, which had waned during President Joe Biden’s recent term before he withdrew from the 2024 race. To bolster their support, LULAC’s local chapters will focus on mobilizing voters in crucial swing states: Arizona, Georgia, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.
LULAC’s leadership will join Harris and Walz on the campaign trail in Nevada this Saturday to officially announce their endorsement. This strategic move underscores LULAC’s commitment to shaping the future of American politics in alignment with their values and goals for the Latino community.
