Biden Cancels Major Speech
President Joe Biden made a significant decision to forego a scheduled convention speech to the National Education Association (NEA), the largest teachers’ union in the nation. This choice came in response to a strike initiated by the NEA’s own staff union, the National Education Association Staff Organizations (NEASO), citing unfair labor practices by the NEA’s headquarters in Washington, D.C.
NEASO launched the strike alleging several grievances against the NEA, including accusations of unilateral changes without bargaining, claims of wage theft, and lack of transparency regarding the outsourcing of $50 million to contractors. Robin McLean, president of NEASO, criticized the NEA for considering a virtual convention to circumvent the physical picket line, calling it a betrayal of union principles and a disregard for fair bargaining practices.
The NEA, in response, stated it had proposed an increase in average employee salaries from $124,004 to $133,218 during negotiations. Despite these efforts, tensions persisted, leading to a two-day strike at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia.
In light of these developments, President Biden’s reelection campaign announced his decision to cancel his scheduled address to the NEA, emphasizing his longstanding support for labor unions and his commitment not to cross picket lines. The campaign clarified that while Biden would still travel to Pennsylvania that weekend, details of his engagements would be adjusted accordingly.
The NEA expressed concern over what it termed as misinformation regarding the ongoing negotiations, asserting its dedication to a fair bargaining process. This situation underscored broader issues within the NEA, highlighting the complexities and challenges inherent in labor relations within one of the country’s largest unions.
