Don’t let the mainstream media downplay this for the Democrats.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) recently drew a striking comparison between President Biden’s proposed changes to the Supreme Court and the January 6, 2021, assault on the U.S. Capitol. In a recent interview with Punchbowl News, McConnell argued that the proposals put forward by Biden resemble efforts to undermine the very foundation of our government’s transition of power. “What some were attempting to do on January 6 was to disrupt the established system of transitioning from one administration to another,” McConnell remarked. “While we can have differing opinions, we must avoid undermining the principles and rules that govern us.”
The President’s proposed reforms include implementing 18-year term limits for Supreme Court justices and instituting a binding code of conduct. These changes would allow each president to nominate a new justice every two years, which McConnell believes is a flawed approach. He expressed his disappointment, noting that these proposals are unconstitutional. “It’s disheartening to see such a long-time Judiciary Committee chairman endorse measures that clearly violate the Constitution’s provision for lifetime appointments for Supreme Court justices,” McConnell asserted.
McConnell’s concerns are echoed by other conservative voices, including former Attorney General William Barr. In a Fox News op-ed co-authored with Kelly Shackelford, president and CEO of First Liberty Institute, Barr criticized the proposed reforms as dangerous to the Constitution and the principle of separation of powers. “The push to radically alter the Supreme Court is alarming,” Barr and Shackelford wrote. “Proposals like term limits for justices and new ethical guidelines not only threaten the integrity of the Court but also pave the way for attempts to pack it with additional liberal justices.”
Vice President Kamala Harris, who has been endorsed by President Biden for a potential presidential run, has supported these reform measures, further fueling the debate.
