It’s interesting to see how much power Pelosi still holds within the Democrat party.
House Democrats, including former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, have been actively advocating for Vice President Kamala Harris to choose Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate, according to Politico. Their support stems from Walz’s extensive experience and strong connections with the House of Representatives.
Pelosi, alongside other influential House members, is pushing for Walz—who spent 12 years as a House Representative—over other potential candidates like Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona. Unlike Walz, Shapiro and Kelly lack direct experience in the House, which makes Walz a more appealing choice for those seeking a candidate with deep legislative relationships.
Walz’s appeal is also bolstered by his broad support base among both centrists and progressives. Key figures such as Representative Ann McLane Kuster, a leader of the New Democrat Coalition, and Representative Pramila Jayapal, who heads the Progressive Caucus, have endorsed Walz for his ability to bridge various ideological divides.
Rep. Rick Larsen of Washington, who previously served with Walz in the House, highlighted that Walz’s existing connections within the chamber would be advantageous for Harris. “By choosing Tim Walz, Vice President Harris would benefit from the relationships he has already established,” Larsen explained.
Rep. Filemón Vela from Texas praised Walz’s independent nature and his respectful approach to disagreements, which earned him considerable respect from Pelosi. Pelosi herself defended Walz’s centrist stance during an appearance on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” where she described him as a “heartland of America Democrat” rather than a leftist. She emphasized Walz’s role as former chair of the Veterans’ Affairs Committee, noting his significant achievements for veterans.
Pelosi’s endorsement underscores her belief that Walz’s balanced approach and legislative experience make him a strong candidate for the vice presidency, providing Harris with valuable support and a solid legislative foundation.
