Pelosi who refused to endorse Kamala just a few weeks ago has totally shifted her stance.
On Sunday, former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi rallied support for Vice President Kamala Harris’s presidential bid during a high-profile fundraiser in California. The event, hosted in San Francisco, concluded a nationwide tour by Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, and reportedly raised over $12 million.
Pelosi, who joined Harris at the fundraiser, lauded the Vice President’s return to California, her home state where she previously served as a U.S. senator, attorney general, and district attorney. “Today is a day of great pride as we welcome Kamala Harris back to her roots in California,” Pelosi proclaimed. She went on to praise Harris for the joy and hope she brings, underscoring her deep connection to the state and its values.
Harris and Walz have recently completed a series of rallies across critical swing states, effectively harnessing momentum as they campaign to build broader support. Pelosi’s endorsement is significant, especially given her pivotal role in the Democratic Party and her influence in Washington politics. Her support for Harris comes after Biden’s exit from the presidential race, a departure precipitated by concerns over his debate performance and the internal discord it caused within the Democratic Party. Biden, 81, decided to withdraw after facing challenges that raised doubts about his ability to win re-election or complete a second term.
Pelosi, who had previously suggested Biden’s hesitance to step aside, was instrumental in setting the stage for Harris’s candidacy. In her remarks, Pelosi highlighted Harris’s extensive experience and accomplishments during Biden’s administration. “Kamala is well-versed in the issues and strategies necessary for success,” Pelosi noted, emphasizing Harris’s effectiveness in advancing the agenda alongside President Biden.
Harris acknowledged the support and enthusiasm surrounding her campaign but urged caution, stressing the importance of not becoming complacent. “The energy we’re seeing is undeniable, but we must remain focused and vigilant,” Harris said, reflecting on the large crowds and positive reception.
California Governor Gavin Newsom, once a potential Democratic contender, also attended the event. As Harris addressed the political landscape, she criticized former President Donald Trump’s stance on abortion, arguing that his return to office could lead to a nationwide ban. Trump has distanced himself from the more restrictive abortion measures proposed by some within his party, suggesting instead that such decisions should be left to individual states.
