Romney is showing his true colors again.
Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) offered a notable endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris’s debate performance on Wednesday, acknowledging that she demonstrated significant intelligence and capability. Romney, who has been a vocal critic of former President Donald Trump, praised Harris for making the most of her chance to connect with a broad audience during Tuesday night’s debate on ABC News.
Romney emphasized that many viewers might not have been familiar with Harris beyond some less flattering online clips. “This was a classic case where Kamala Harris, who many people knew only from a few negative soundbites, showed a different side,” Romney stated to reporters on Capitol Hill. “She effectively used the debate to reveal that she is indeed a knowledgeable and competent individual with well-articulated views on various issues.”
The debate marked the first direct confrontation between Trump and Harris, and the vice president capitalized on the opportunity to engage vigorously on critical topics such as immigration, the economy, and abortion. She also addressed foreign policy, demonstrating her preparedness and command of the issues at hand.
Romney’s positive assessment was echoed by other Republicans, including New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu, who asserted that Harris “definitely” emerged as the winner of the debate. This sentiment was supported by a CNN flash poll released shortly after the debate, which indicated that 63 percent of viewers felt Harris outperformed Trump, while 37 percent favored Trump.
Romney’s praise is particularly noteworthy given his earlier announcement that he would not be supporting Trump in the 2024 general election. His comments reflect a shift in focus towards evaluating candidates based on their debate performance and issue positions, rather than party allegiance alone.
