Speaker Johnson Calls Out Biden Over Major New Strike

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., has called for decisive action from the Biden-Harris administration in light of the ongoing strike by dockworkers that began early Tuesday morning. He criticized the administration for its inability to effectively address the situation, which has led to significant disruptions across key ports in the nation.

The International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA), representing around 45,000 workers, initiated the strike at 12:01 a.m. on Tuesday, halting operations at 36 ports from Maine to Texas. This strike impacts nearly half of America’s cargo operations and underscores the urgency for leadership that can facilitate negotiations and prevent economic fallout.

The union is advocating for a pay increase of approximately 77% over the next six years. Meanwhile, the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX), which negotiates on behalf of the ports, has proposed a wage hike of nearly 50%—a figure the ILA deems insufficient given the economic challenges workers face. Despite attempts at negotiation, no progress had been made since June, culminating in the current strike.

In response to the situation, the White House has urged both parties to negotiate “in good faith.” However, Speaker Johnson emphasized that the administration’s lack of proactive leadership could worsen an already fragile economy characterized by high inflation, stagnant wages, and declining job opportunities.

“Just one day of halted operations could have dire consequences for our economy,” Johnson warned. “American families will experience the ripple effects through rising prices, empty store shelves, and reduced economic activity.”

While the Biden administration has attempted to downplay the strike’s potential impact, experts have indicated that even a brief disruption could severely impede the flow of goods into the U.S., especially with the holiday season approaching.

Johnson concluded by stressing that the resolution of this strike hinges on effective leadership from the White House. He called on the Biden-Harris administration to ensure both sides remain engaged in meaningful discussions to reach a fair agreement that supports workers and keeps vital goods moving through our ports.
