MTG For Senate?

Senator Jon Ossoff (D-Ga.) recently warned that if Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) were to win a Senate seat, it would be a “disaster” for the country. Ossoff’s comments come as he prepares for his own reelection in 2026, following his surprising victory in 2020, which helped Democrats secure control of the Senate.

While Ossoff is focused on his own race, national attention is turning to Greene, who has become one of the most controversial figures in the Republican Party. Former President Donald Trump has hinted at supporting Greene for a Senate run, fueling speculation that she could challenge Ossoff in Georgia. Ossoff, however, warned that Greene’s brand of fiery, polarizing politics would not sit well with Georgia voters in a general election, though he acknowledged that her alignment with Trump could give her a strong boost in a Republican primary.

In an appearance on MSNBC’s The Last Word, Ossoff emphasized that Greene’s presence in the Senate would be problematic for the nation. He said, “Marjorie Taylor Greene represents an extremely divisive, zealous, partisan MAGA brand of politics that I think would be an electoral problem for her in Georgia.” He added that Trump’s endorsement could make her a serious contender, even if her politics are highly polarizing.

Trump himself has expressed support for Greene’s political ambitions, telling her during a 2023 rally in Texas, “I would fight like hell for you.” This suggests that if Greene does run for Senate, Trump will rally behind her, making the race even more contentious.

For Georgia voters, the question will be whether they want a Senator who embodies the fiery, populist politics of Marjorie Taylor Greene or one who represents a more measured, traditional approach to governance, like Jon Ossoff. In any case, Ossoff’s warning is clear: Greene’s Senate run could spell trouble for both Georgia and the nation.
