Wearing an eye-catching orange safety vest, Trump took a moment to address reporters while riding in the truck, which he humorously dubbed a tribute to President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.
“Take a look at my garbage truck,” he quipped, as it rolled around the tarmac. “This is in honor of Kamala and Joe.”
This publicity stunt came on the heels of Biden’s recent remarks, where he disparaged Trump supporters, calling them “garbage” during a campaign call. His comments were triggered by a controversial joke from comedian Tony Hinchcliffe, who made an inflammatory statement at a recent Republican rally. Biden’s words drew sharp criticism from Republican leaders, who quickly drew parallels to Hillary Clinton’s infamous “basket of deplorables” comment from 2016.
In an attempt to clarify his remarks, the Biden administration edited the official transcript, suggesting he meant to address Hinchcliffe specifically rather than all Trump supporters. Nonetheless, Biden’s comments continued to spark outrage among conservatives, who saw it as another example of the Democrats’ disdain for ordinary Americans.
In a press interaction, Trump addressed the situation by distancing himself from Hinchcliffe, stating he wasn’t familiar with the comedian and expressing his admiration for Puerto Rico. “Nobody has done more for Puerto Rico than I have,” he asserted, emphasizing his efforts in the aftermath of hurricanes that affected the island.
As the garbage truck trailed Trump’s motorcade on its way to a rally in Green Bay, it served as a stark reminder of the political tensions that continue to simmer in the country. With a mixture of humor and defiance, Trump was clearly ready to rally his supporters against what he framed as the Democrats’ elitist views and divisive rhetoric.
