Speaker Johnson Calls Out The Secret Service
House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., has reacted strongly to the Secret Service’s decision to place five agents on administrative leave following an internal probe into the security breaches that nearly led to the assassination of former President Donald Trump last month. Johnson characterized this action as merely a preliminary step toward holding the agency accountable for its grave failures.
“On July 13th, a tragic event unfolded in Butler, PA. Corey Comperatore, a courageous father, was tragically killed at a rally, and President Trump was narrowly spared from a fatal attack when he was shot in the head—just a hair’s breadth away from death,” Johnson stated on X. “This incident marks a monumental lapse in the Secret Service’s protective duties. While the decision to place several agents on leave is a move in the right direction, it is woefully overdue, coming 41 days after the attempt on President Trump’s life.”
Johnson criticized the Secret Service for its lack of transparency and called for a thorough investigation by the House’s Bipartisan Task Force. “Given the agency’s reluctance to confront the reality of its failures, our task force will persist in its rigorous investigation to uncover the truth and ensure accountability,” he asserted. “The liberal media may try to downplay this event and big tech might attempt to suppress information, but the American people will remember this tragic day, and so will the House.”
RealClearPolitics has reported that the suspended agents are from the Secret Service’s Pittsburgh Field Office. Meanwhile, other agents who were involved in the security planning for the Butler event are still on duty. CBS News confirmed that the head of the Pittsburgh office is also among those placed on administrative leave.
The Secret Service’s internal affairs division is continuing to investigate how 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks managed to access a rooftop near the venue where Trump was speaking, firing eight shots, including one that grazed the Republican nominee’s ear, before being neutralized by law enforcement.
