Trump appears super confident about this debate and some MAGA republicans are concerned.
On Monday, former President Donald Trump made headlines during his visit to the Eden Center in Virginia, the largest Vietnamese commercial hub on the East Coast. When asked by a reporter about his preparations for the upcoming debate against Vice President Kamala Harris, scheduled for September 10, Trump offered a candid response.
“I’m not really preparing in any special way,” Trump said. “I believe my entire life has been one long preparation for debates. You can’t simply cram decades of experience into one week. There’s some debate prep, of course, but it’s really about knowing your material inside and out. I’ve always done it this way and I know my subject matter better than anyone else.“
Trump’s remarks highlight his confidence in his extensive experience rather than focusing on specific debate strategies. This approach contrasts sharply with the meticulous preparations often seen in presidential campaigns.
Trump’s spokesperson, Steven Cheung, echoed the former president’s sentiments in a statement to Newsweek, pointing out Harris’ infrequent media appearances. “As President Trump said, he’s been preparing for this his whole life through constant interaction with the media. Meanwhile, Kamala Harris seems to avoid such interactions,” Cheung remarked.
During his conversation, Trump also criticized Mitt Romney’s debate preparation from the 2012 election. Romney, who locked himself away for weeks to prepare, faced criticism for his overly rehearsed performance. Trump suggested that Romney’s intense preparation led to a lack of spontaneity, something he aims to avoid.
The debate between Trump and Harris comes in the wake of President Joe Biden stepping aside from the race. Biden’s performance in debates and his subsequent polling numbers led to his withdrawal, clearing the path for Harris to become the Democratic nominee.
As the debate approaches, there’s also a disagreement over the format, particularly regarding whether microphones should be live or muted. Harris’s campaign prefers live microphones to ensure a transparent and uninterrupted discussion, while Trump’s team seems inclined towards the rules used in previous debates with Biden, which included muted mics.
In addition to debate preparation, Trump continues to express skepticism about the network hosting the debate. He has voiced a preference for alternative networks like NBC, CBS, CNN, or Fox News, over ABC, which he has labeled as “FAKE NEWS.”
Meanwhile, Harris is gearing up for a significant campaign tour across South Georgia, aiming to consolidate support ahead of the election. With polls indicating a tight race, the upcoming debate and campaign activities are poised to play a crucial role in shaping the final outcome of this highly competitive election season.
