Harris Gaining Ground On Trump
According to a recent poll released by the Des Moines Register/Mediacom, former President Trump’s lead in Iowa has shrunk to just 4 points, a notable decline from his previous 18-point advantage over President Biden in June. The poll, conducted between September 8 and 11, shows Trump leading Vice President Kamala Harris by 47 percent to 43 percent among likely Iowa voters.
This marks a significant shift from earlier this year, when a similar survey revealed Trump with 50 percent support compared to Biden’s 32 percent before Biden exited his campaign. The current poll also reflects the presence of independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., whose name will still appear on the Iowa ballot despite his campaign’s end. Kennedy garnered 6 percent of the vote, a decrease from the 9 percent he received in June.
The poll also notes 1 percent of respondents backing Libertarian candidate Chase Oliver, 1 percent supporting another candidate, and 1 percent remaining undecided.
A key trend in this poll is the stark gender divide in support. Harris holds a significant lead among women, capturing 53 percent of their support compared to Trump’s 36 percent. Conversely, Trump dominates among men, receiving 59 percent of their support to Harris’s 32 percent.
Additionally, voter enthusiasm has risen, with 81 percent of Iowans indicating they will definitely vote in the upcoming election, up from 76 percent in June. Enthusiasm is particularly pronounced among Harris supporters, with 80 percent expressing high levels of enthusiasm—34 percent extremely and 46 percent very. Trump supporters also show strong enthusiasm, with 74 percent—33 percent extremely and 40 percent very.
The poll, which surveyed 656 likely voters in Iowa, carries a margin of error of 3.8 percentage points, reflecting the evolving dynamics of this crucial battleground state.
