Liz Cheney Fires Back At Trump

Former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) responded sharply to President-elect Donald Trump’s criticism after President Biden awarded her and Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) the Presidential Citizens Medal this week. Trump’s scathing remarks came after Biden recognized Cheney and Thompson for their roles in the January 6th committee investigation.

On Friday, Cheney fired back on X (formerly Twitter), writing, “Donald, this is not the Soviet Union. You can’t change the truth and you cannot silence us.” Her response echoed her long-standing criticism of Trump’s refusal to acknowledge the legitimate results of the 2020 election and his subsequent attempts to overturn them. Cheney, who was vice chair of the House committee that investigated the Capitol riot, received praise for her dedication to upholding the Constitution, a value she believes is being undermined by Trump’s rhetoric.

In his post on Truth Social, Trump had mocked the Presidential Citizens Medal, calling the award “fake” and accusing Cheney of being “corrupt” and of receiving the honor solely because she “hated ‘TRUMP.’” Cheney has consistently been at odds with the former president, especially after her pivotal role in the January 6th investigation. But Cheney’s response to Trump’s allegations was firm and unflinching. She reminded him of his many false claims about the 2020 election and the subsequent legal and professional consequences faced by his allies.

“Remember all your lies about the voting machines, the election workers, your countless allegations of fraud that never happened?” Cheney wrote, pointing out how multiple Trump lawyers had been sanctioned, disbarred, or faced other legal repercussions for their attempts to challenge the election results.

Cheney’s pointed remarks also included a nod to the courage of former Vice President Mike Pence, who refused to cave to Trump’s pressure to block the certification of the 2020 election results. “Remember how your former Vice President prevented you from overturning our Republic?” Cheney asked, before concluding, “We remember. And now, as you take office again, the American people need to reject your latest malicious falsehoods and stand as the guardrails of our Constitutional Republic — to protect the America we love from you.”

Cheney’s unyielding stance highlights her commitment to preserving American democracy and protecting the Constitution from those who seek to undermine it. Whether one agrees with her or not, her message is clear: protecting the integrity of the Republic requires a firm stand against divisive lies and actions that threaten our freedoms.
